The San Francisco Bay area consists of some of the most busy and complicated airspace around. Pilots from calmer areas are frequently intimidated by the Class B, 2 Class C, and 8 Class D airspaces that cover the blanket the Bay. However, with a little advance planning it's actually quite easy to transit the area, either with or without ATC's help. If you do elect clearance from ATC, you will generally find them extremely professional and helpful, if busy. Just be sure to follow directions exactly and don't take up more frequency time than needed. In return, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Stanford, SFO, downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and many other sights.
